The Uniqueness of Bataknese Culture

Name Tradition

Welcome back to my blog, guys! Still same with the last blog, I will explain about name, but now I will explain about name tradition in Bataknese. Before explain name tradition, let me introduce what Bataknese is. Check it out!

According to Wikipedia, Bataknese is one of the largest ethnic in Indonesia. Ethnic groups that categorized as Batak are Toba, Karo, Pakpak, Simalungun, Angkola, and Mandailing. Bataknese is a tribe that lives in most of North Sumatra.

Every Batak person must have a "clan" (Marga in Indonesian), if they do not have a clan, they are not Bataknese people, hehe. Bataknese people always uphold their clan. Every two Batak people meet, they must ask what their clan is. Why is it like that? Because through clans, bataknese people can find relatives of their descendants. Other than that, by knowing someone's clan, the bataknese people can determine their soul mate. Because in the custom of bataknese, we cannot marry someone who has the same clan with us.

As a bataknese, I have a clan, that is Siregar. Actually in the Batak tradition, the clan for women is called Boru, if for men the term remains clan. So, the clan is a hereditary name from our ancestors. More simply, the clan is the name of our father. For example, my father is the clan of Siregar, so I become boru Siregar.

In addition, in Bataknese culture the boy is very important. Because a clan is descended from a man. Even many ancient people who had more than 10 children just to get a boy. Yes, that's the culture of Bataknese.
That’s all some of name tradition in Bataknese culture that I can explain. I hope this blog can increase your knowledge about the custom of Bataknese. See you in my another blog!
